What is
Macular Degeneration?.

Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition affecting as many as 15 million Americans and millions more around the world. The disease attacks the macula of the eye, where our sharpest central vision occurs.

This is the vision we use to drive, read, recognize faces and perform daily tasks. AMD does not cause complete blindness, only central blindness. It spares the peripheral vision (around the edges), leaving only dim images or black holes at the center of vision.

AMD is the number one cause of severe vision loss & legal blindness in adults over 60 in the U.S. More than one out of every three can develop signs of age-related macular degeneration, with over 200,000 new cases diagnosed every year..

The Impact of

Age-related macular degeneration destroys the clear, “straight ahead” central vision necessary for reading, driving, identifying faces, TV, navigating steps & performing other daily tasks we take for granted. It can make it more difficult to see contrast and can change the way color is seen. Peripheral vision may not be affected, and it is possible to see “out of the corner of your eye”.

The impact of developing AMD can be devastating to those who were independent and active prior to the onset of this impairment. Their visual world gradually diminishes into a vague blur, making ordinary daily activities challenging. Vision rehabilitation and assistive devices can help people use their remaining vision effectively. Dr. Ashcraft is one of the nations leading low vision doctors, who helps 1000's of people rebalance their lives through restorative vision devices.

4 Main Causes of Macular Degeneration

1. Age

The biggest risk factor for Macular Degeneration is age. Your risk increases as you age, and the disease is most likely to occur in those 55 and older.

2. Genetics

People with a family history of AMD are at a higher risk.

3. Race.

Caucasians are more likely to develop the disease than African-Americans or Hispanics/Latinos.

4. Smoking.

Smoking doubles the risk of AM.

Symptoms of
Macular Degener.ation

The symptoms of macular degeneration may be different for different people. It often develops slowly and painlessly, and can be difficult to notice in its early stages. As the disease progresses, central vision becomes shadowy, blurred or fuzzy. Images and straight lines may look slightly distorted as the retina becomes irregular.

Why low vision evaluations are
nothing like a regular eye exam!

We find out the amount of vision the patient has by performing a Low Vision evaluation. It is not anything like a regular eye exam:

We use special charts and techniques to “draw out” any residual vision that may be “hiding” in the periphery.

We recheck the regular eyeglass prescription to improve it if possible.

We see how magnification affects the level of vision...

How is a low vision doctor different from a regular doctor?

Low Vision doctors have been trained in the physics, optics and use of high powered lenses and lens systems. They understand the principles of magnification, field of view, depth and of focus. They also have a working knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of the multitude of low vision glasses, magnifiers, electronic and non-optical devices available.

A low vision eye doctor understands how to work with patients and families who can be extremely upset, fearful, and even depressed. It’s a doctor who has the patience and time to explain the eye and vision condition and what the future may hold for patients who may be confused, misinformed and/or have an unrealistic view of their future.

A low vision eye doctor has compassion and empathy for what the patient and family are going through as well as the knowledge, resources and experience to help them adjust to the difficult situation. Low vision doctors know how to analyze a task according to the amount of vision, lighting, working distance and field of view needed for completion. They are experts at designing low vision glasses to meet the needs of the patient.

The Solution?
Telescopic. Low Vision Glasses

Telescopic Low Vision Devices are miniature Binoculars inserted into eyeglasses are called TELESCOPIC SPECTACLES. The patient’s eyeglass prescription, as well as the highest quality optics, must be used in the system for maximum clarity. Telescopic spectacles can be for one eye (monocular) or two eyes (binocular). The telescope can be mounted in various positions in the glasses.

Telescopes vary in power, field, weight, focusable and non-focusable. Telescopic optics are very complex. The knowledge and experience of the doctor i.n designing and fitting is extremely important in determining what is best for you. Cost varies with the prescription needed in the system and the type of telescopes ordered. This can be discussed during the COMPLIMENTARY INTERVIEW.

The key to low vision devices is magnification. Low vision aids and devices magnify the image in the eye so that is will extend on nearby good areas of the retina. There are many types of magnification devices that can help you see better.

However, low vision aids are task specific. What works for driving and watching television will not work for reading. The role of the doctor is first to find out what tasks are most important to you.

Try before you buy!
Low Vision Gl.asses

We find out the amount of vision needed to do the task desired with very specific questions and demonstrations.

We ask the patient to bring samples of activities they do (sewing, woodworking, painting and card playing, etc.).

We figure out the best magnification device that allows the person to do the task by having many unique demonstrators in the office.

We do not order any low vision device unless we prove that it works in the office first.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Almost always, prescriptions and magnification levels can be changed without the need for a whole new pair of glasses. We offer a twelve-month warranty if the prescription changes at no charge to the patient. It is interesting that changes are actually rarely needed.

It typically takes two to four weeks for specialized glasses to be fabricated. Arrangements can be made to have them sooner in some circumstances.. If a person has a special event happening and needs the glasses, the lab can usually expedite the order..

During the evaluation, the patient will use actual low vision telescope, microscope and prismatic glasses on the tasks desired. The doctor and the patient will see that they work BEFORE they are ordered. This will be done again when the patient picks up the glasses. We never order glasses until the patient knows that they work..

We accept cash, personal check and all major credit cards. In addition, we offer no-interest and low-interest financing
